About the Item
This large and epic battle scene commemorates one of the most unusual actions of the Napoleonic Wars. The British Honourable East India Company’s China Fleet of merchant vessels left Canton in early 1804 commanded by Commodore Nathaniel Dance. On 11 February, the fleet, consisting of only sixteen Indiamen and eleven smaller ships, met a French squadron commanded by Admiral Linois off Pulo Aura in the Straits of Malacca.
Undefended by delayed Royal Naval Ships of the Line, Dance adopted a bold attitude and a complex ruse to make the French think several of his ships were actually Ships of the Line. After less than an hour of battle the French admiral concluded that he was facing an overwhelming force and withdrew, allowing the British convoy to escape safely.
Every great maritime painter of the period depicted this battle, some more than once, but Dodd's is particularly impactful. Its large canvas size allows a feeling of expansion and broad scope while the alternating areas of a light and shadow convey a sense of drama and danger. Like many of Dodd's works it's an important record of history while also something that draws any viewer into the action. It's no wonder the Greenwich Maritime has so many of his pieces on their collections.

- The Clipper FLYING FISH in San Francisco BayLocated in Costa Mesa, CAOne of the most exciting races between American clipper ships took place between October, 1852 and January, 1853. The vessels involved were the crack clippers FLYING FISH, JOHN GILPIN and WILD PIGEON. Departing New York, each a few days apart, the three ships met up off Cape Horn and proceeded, often in sight of one another, to fly up the west coast to San Francisco. The JOHN GILPIN gambled by heading farther west into the pacific where a strong northerly got her to San Francisco first.
